Our New Home Reno Series: Loft and Multipurpose Room
Before I begin, I’d like to share a couple of pics of our finished stairway and railings with you. It was a mess around here but I’m really happy with how it turned out. I hope you like it too =0)
And here is the new wall cap at the top of the stairs. The 1980s got the old one back. =0)
Our upstairs loft is the perfect multipurpose room for a number of activities. The most important is storage! Also, my husband needed a place to work on home things and our kids will need a place to sleep.
So, with the help of SketchUp by Trimble , a 3D computer program I use, I came up with the following concepts. For personal use, there’s a free version and it’s pretty easy to learn the basics just by watching their tutorials on YouTube.
Here’s a bird’s eye view so you can get your bearings:
SketchUp has a library of ready-made furniture models provided by other SketchUp users that you can add right into your drawing to make things faster. I scale them to my floor plan once imported.
Here area a couple of other views that will let you see what the room will “feel” like when standing there.
The sleeper sofa and ottoman are on order and as it turns out, we’ll be waiting quite a while. The showroom salesperson told me a main factory that supplies a lot of the foam for upholstery burned down last year and this has caused a major delay nationwide. I wonder if you’ve experienced the same thing?
I’ll be sure to circle back once the room is finished but here are photos from my built-in desk and shelving units for now.
I chose a matching white laminate top for all the tops because it is very durable and easy to work on. I used my own hardware to give it more of a custom look. (All the stuff in the middle is for sale and will be gone soon.)
We can also use this long counter space at the desk for crafts or anything else that comes up. And I loved bringing out the kids’ childhood books again. I’ve really missed them since our move. There’s something about a “library” feeling that just says “home”.
The window seat will have a fabric cushion and the top of the blinds will have a cornice box. More on window treatments at a later date.
So there you have it. Plenty of multipurpose room ideas coming your way! Planning takes discipline. Here’s a link to my Planning Bundle in my DIY Outlet if you’re interested!
