Our New Home Reno Series: Patio Furniture Ideas
It wasn’t easy moving into a new home in the middle of a pandemic. I was really nervous about having anyone in our home unnecessarily so we decided to start with the landscape and patio furniture. Our old furniture was well….old. And we felt that for the surrounding area, a different style would be better. Here’s the hillside just outside of our community to give you the idea. We love taking walks down this hillside. The ocean is just beyond in the background and under the clouds.
Our patio is much smaller than our last home’s and it’s made up of mostly pavers. So, the garden became one of our most important focal points. Here’s an aerial view to give you the idea. The previous owners built the fireplace and it sits right outside of the family room sliding glass doors. It really draws your eye out the door and into the yard.
For the seating and table, I chose an aluminum frame which has a finish that mimics driftwood. This is a line from Outdoor Elegance in La Verne, and I think it does a good job of bridging the gap between the beach and the surrounding hillside. There are 3 large pine trees just behind us and when the breeze kicks up, the sound is more relaxing than I can tell you.

The cushions are bright white and the pillows have parrots in tropical but subdued colors. The fabrics are Sunbrella which means they are made from solution-dyed acrylic. This is a process from which the fibers for the yarn are started as a colored liquid (acrylic solution). If you were to cut a fiber all the way through, you’ll see it is the same color on the inside as the outside. This makes for the best fabric for outdoors as well as for kids and pets inside. You can also find pillows and throws made of this same type of fiber. This makes the backyard living care-free!
The furniture is centered on the outdoor fireplace. On the other side is our BBQ and windows from our master bedroom. I love seeing the fountain and the bird tray feeder from our bedroom. We’ll probably leave the space open for that view. But…maybe when we return to normal and do more entertaining, we’ll add a bar or bar table and stools for that spot.
And lighting is everything. Always. Our gardener did a nice job of adding a garden, path and up-lights to give the yard a lovely ambience at night.
I mentioned the bird feeder. This was left for us by the previous owners. We’ve discovered we can attract all kinds of birds to our yard and it’s so fun to watch them. We see a lot of Mourning Doves and Hummingbirds lately. Here’s a photo of the Doves. They are so sweet (but they do seem to be having a bit of a spat.) ❤️❤️
We’re making progress! Next week, we’ll take a little field trip to my son’ apartment!
