Our New Home Reno Series: Master Bedroom Before and After
We are rounding the corner to completion phase I of our new home reno projects. Today, I’ll share the “Before & After” story of our master bedroom with you and give you tips on how to create a bedroom sanctuary.
Last year, my husband and I began a new chapter in our lives. All the kids were up and on their own and we were finally empty nesters. I have to say it’s bittersweet to walk around your family home and think about the good ‘ol days when the house was filled with kids and laughter.
But at the same time, you realize you’ve done a good job of successfully launching these new adults into society and this is how life is supposed to be.
So, we found ourselves in a new city with a house that needed well….pretty much everything! It was updates to the rescue!
By the way, if you’re new around here, you can follow our story from day one here.
It’s so important to have comfortable spaces in your home, don’t you agree? And the master bedroom has always been a place that I cherish. To read, relax, dream. And so, today, I’ll share some ways to turn your bedroom into a sanctuary. In my opinion, your bedroom should be the gift you give yourself.
Ok, back to my story. Here are some before pictures to frame this story. The one with furniture is from the realtor’s site.
And remember the “crazy doorway” to the bathroom? It’s finally corrected on both sides.
We decided to have the house re-piped before doing any decorating and because we knew there would have to be lots of holes (45 to be exact) cut into our walls so that work had to come first.
Great news! I was able to use all our existing furniture for our new master bedroom. I did add new carpeting, drapery, and lighting which you’ll notice in the after photos below.
If you’ll read to the end, I’ll share some ideas for making your own bedroom a peaceful, comfortable place too.
As promised, here are 10 ways to make your bedroom your sanctuary:
Use soft, peaceful colors. Neutrals or those inspired by nature work well for a bedroom
Pair dark woods with light fabrics to create an elevated hotel inspired look.
Carpeting, upholstered headboard and chairs, and floor length drapery add (sound deadening) a quieting quality.
Lots of varied textures make the room interesting without the need for “splashes” of color.
Use color in your art and accessories but sparingly.
Natural fabrics such as linen and wool feel natural to the senses and convey luxury.
Use only accessories that have meaning to you to make the room feel like you.
Use soft lighting and with remote control for convenience and to allow you to change the mood easily from wherever you are in the room.
Use soft throw blankets to add a sense of coziness.
Leave the television in the family room for less distractions. =0)
That’s it for today. I hope you’ll join me again next week as I continue to share my tips and insights into interior design.
