My Best Tips for Space Planning

Today we’re talking about space planning for your home.

Almost everyone I know loves having a feeling of space in their rooms. They crave it and there never seems to be enough of it.

To achieve this, people often want to “line everything up around the walls”.  I see this over and over again.

Yes, it will make the room feel larger but what they sometimes don’t think about is how to make the room function properly.

And this leads to a room that doesn’t “feel” right.

Here are 3 tried-and-true tips for space planning your new room.

1. Measure Properly

Mark everything down. Measure your room and mark the ceiling heights, the moldings, the doors and windows, and also the electrical outlets.  These will all prove helpful down the road.

2. Think About How You Use Your Room

Considering your lifestyle is very important in this process.  Do your kids do their homework here?  Do you entertain?  If so, how often?  Is there a need to carve out a little space for yourself for reading or quiet activities?  Your lifestyle and the way your design your room have to go hand in hand.

3. Create Zones for Your Furniture

DON’T line everything up around the walls.  If you do, chances are you’ll be too far away from your kids or your guests to be truly comfortable.  And you could miss an opportunity to have that separate little reading nook or quiet space you’ve been dreaming about.

Here’s an example of what I mean.
