Choosing a Custom Paint Color

Can’t find the perfect color you want on the fan deck? No problem. Custom mix it right?

Actually, it’s not as simple as you might think. So, prepare to spend a little time if you choose to go this route.

All paints usually have four main ingredients:

1. Pigments (a combination of ingredients containing color).

2. Binders (to support for dry film).

3. Solvents (the liquids that support the paint to get from can to brush to wall)

4. Additives (to further enhance the paint’s performance).

These main ingredients or the formula itself, will affect the outcome of the color you’re after.

Hint: You know the can of that the paint store clerk starts with? It may look white, but it actually has its own color because of the base ingredients..

And that is why, if you try adding a little “white” from another can to a color you already have, while it may lighten the color, it will most likely change the color completely.

To mix a custom color, you’ve got to consider both the pigments (colors) and the original base formula.

And this can get tricky….and time consuming. Trust me. I’ve spent hours in the paint store, experimenting with getting the right color for a room.

I’m not here to say it's impossible, but you’ll find it much easier (and faster) to select it from your fan deck.

Pro Tip: Find a paint manufacturer with a deck showing a group of colors show in lighter and darker options within one page. You’ll save tons of time and aggravation and your project will sail right along. =0)
