6 Furniture Arrangements for the Same Room

It's a rainy day and I felt like doing something fun. Naturally, I reached for my iPad. There's a sketching app I like called Paper by WeTransfer. Have you seen it? Here's what it looks like in the App store.

If you love to sketch or you love to color, this blog is for you. ❤️ You'll see why in a minute.

I started with a simple room plan. It has two doorways and a large window. This room is roughly 22' x 15'.

Here are 6 different furniture arrangments for the same room. These birds-eye views are called "Plan Views" in interior design.

  1. The first arrangment (above) is probably the most common. A sofa, two arm chairs, side table and a rug. On the side tables, you'll notice table lamps. I've centered everything on the window to give it a feeling of balance. I could add more to the wall at the bottom of the photo. But this is a main traffic pattern so it would need to be fairly small.

2. This time, I've added a shallow hall table on that bottom wall. Underneath, I've tucked two ottomans for extra seating when needed. This room is much more formal as it has two identical sides. Symmetry is considered formal. Notice again, the entire furniture grouping is centered on the window.

3. Now, do you notice anything else in this room? It's the same as the last example except I've added a bar cart to the right hand wall. I've been careful to allow for plenty of walk space around the room and from doorway to doorway.

4. In this arrangement, I've gone for a lounge type atmosphere. Four armchairs, two small cocktail tables, floor lamps, hall table with tall stick lamps and a tall tree to fill the empty space and give the room an intimate feeling.

5. And everyone loves a comfy sectional. So, in this case, I've lined the ends of the rug up with the window. From there, I've placed the furniture evenly around the rug, (It's all about visual balance). There's a shallow sofa table with tall stick lamps behind the right side of the sectional. I am assuming we can run the cords under sofa to a wall outlet under the window. ALWAYS hide the cords the best you can. You also see another hall table and lamps on the bottom wall. A TV cabinet and TV on the left are the focal point for this room. And last, a tall tree or large potted plant complete the room in the top right corner.

Tip: Try to keep the center of your TV screen at your eye level when seated. This makes for a more comfortable experience as you won't need to look upward to watch the show. You'll save yourself eye and neck strain.

6. This last arrangement is for those who love to relax and watch a show, do the crossword or just read. Two armchairs with ottomans (or matching recliners if you prefer). A side table with small lamp, sofa table with 2 ottomans for extra seats when needed and a potted tree. On the bottom wall, I've added dashed lines to represent a gallery of artwork. This helps to create visual weight to a room without encroaching on the traffic patterns.

Ok, your turn! I've include a blank room below, for you to try your own arrangements. Or... just for fun, color my examples! I'd love to see what you come up with so email it to me if you've like a critique! Debbie@MyPocketDesigner.com. I promise I'll answer you personally.
