Want to Create Your Own Private Resort?
It’s that time of year. Those lazy days of summer.
Do you like to entertain outside during the warmer months? Making sure your furniture is “worry-free” and lasts a long time will let you enjoy your company and the season so much more.
Here are a few things to think about when creating an outdoor space.
Patio furniture comes in all styles and materials. From wood such as Teak or Ipe (a personal fav) to Rattan, Stone or metal–just to name a few– the selection is enormous! Consider all of your options before you begin to purchase. Ask yourself a few basic questions and understand what different materials will need in terms of maintenance.
Do I have a covered area for my furniture with fabric on it?
While outdoor fabrics are very hard-wearing, they do have a shelf life. Keeping them out of direct sunlight and protecting them in the off-season are great ways to ensure they last even longer. Fabrics that are made from “solution-dyed acrylic” will last the longest. This is because before the yarns are created, the fibers are made from a dyed liquid. You can literally pour bleach on this type of fabric and not harm it!
If you don’t have an actual shaded structure, include umbrellas and storage bins.
Which direction is our patio space situated?
If you have an east or north-facing yard, you’re going to see less wear on your furniture because you’ll experience fewer direct sunlight hours. Be mindful of the direction and plan accordingly. Use curtains or awnings to combat the peak sun hours.
What styles of interior furniture do I already own?
It’s important to create a “flow” from inside to outside so that your new patio furniture becomes an extension of your home. You’re creating another “room” when you think about it. So, consider color and style as it relates to your home’s interior when you are selecting for your new patio.
Do I have room for different seating areas as well as dining?
If you can, measure your patio space or spaces and draw them to scale on some graph paper. Your budget will thank you later. =0)
