30 Guest Bedroom Ideas
Having an extra bedroom where guests can stay is a luxury. But when friends and family visit, treating them to a comfortable room is a must. In this article, I’ll share some tips and inspiration for creating the perfect oasis for your guests.
If your room must serve more than one purpose, here are some tips for multipurpose rooms from a previous article.
Let’s Start with Sleep!
It’s hard to away from our regular routine and when we visit friends and family, having a comfortable room is a treat. It starts with a comfortable mattress! I’m not suggesting you break the bank on this item but do get what you afford. It will last you longer and please your guests.
Quality sheets add to the luxurious feeling of any bedroom. I like sateen sheets in white because they’re fresh feeling and hotel inspired.
You never know who might be allergic to feathers or be a back or side sleeper. Be ready for anything by offering an assortment of pillows.
STORAGE
Store extra blankets in the room if possible. Having to ask for a blanket in the middle of the night can be troublesome.
To save on cost, I tried my hand at making a hotel-inspired duvet and sham set. I used 2-king-sized, cream-colored sateen sheets and pillowcases. I purchased some cream-colored gimp at the fabric store to dress them up. Added a button enclosure which I sewed by hand and then inserted a down comforter.
Toiletries
Extra Towels and soap wrapped with ribbon add a special touch. Add a basket filled with toothpaste, toothbrush, mini-shampoo ad hair dryer. They will be appreciated.
For the nightstand, fresh flowers always delight the senses. Scented candle. A bowl for jewelry and coins and a box of tissue to make it complete.
Workspace & Seating
If there is room, a writing desk with a journal, pen and charger are always appreciated. Remember to tuck the wi-fi code in a drawer for safe keeping. And a waste basket underneath.
If space is tight, consider letting the desk double as the nightstand. Add an alarm clock and it’s complete.
Here is the desk my mother used in my old bedroom. When my son was a baby, she created a changing table with it by adding a sheep skin and changing pad to the top when needed. It was the perfect size for a baby. I keep the drawers empty to offer extra “dresser” storage to guests.
I loved that desk so much; I restored it and now enjoy it in my own guest room. I paired it with a comfortable chair because it’s nice to offer a good reading chair in the room as well.
Luggage and Window Treatments
You can find a luggage rack at most home décor stores these days. And always keep a couple of drawers empty and space in the closet for guests if possible.
When I added drapery to our guest room, I decided to use a black-out lining. When people are on vacation, they may want to sleep later than usual.
Color and Artwork & Ventilation
I am partial to colors inspired by nature, particularly the ocean. So, my home offer soothing color in every room. I do think a soothing palette for a guest room is appropriate because it is peaceful and relaxing.
Good ventilation also plays a part in creating a restful space. Be sure your windows are easy to open, and your AC registers are operating.
Artwork with meaning is always a nice touch in a guest room. It’s one of the few rooms in a home where family photos are appropriate. But I also like to use them in family rooms, halls, and stairways.
Other Amenities
Robe hooks on the back of the guest room door and a full-length mirror, are sure to please your guests.
I hope you found some useful tips for your own guest room project. Until next time!
