What’s Wrong with Going Custom?
So often, I see a look of panic in my client’s eyes when I mention that a lot of the furniture we produce is “custom” made. People tend to associate the word “custom” with expensive or luxury.
But if you use your local upholstery shop and you can control the costs of the materials you use, you will soon realize you have nothing to worry about.
It is possible to have exactly what you want for your home without breaking the bank.
One way you can control your overall cost is in the materials you choose. The cost of the fabric for a sofa, for instance. If you need 20 yards for a 7-foot sofa, think of the savings you’ll realize in just that fabric alone. Or perhaps you can choose foam over feather/down for the seat cushion inserts to also drive the cost down.
Sofas for instance, are best made with kiln-dried, hardwood frames. Then, bases are eight-way hand-tied making study and able to last a long time. Seat cushions with spring and feather/down or spring and foam inserts are also what will last the longest. The longevity is in the springs. They keep the structure strong over time
Also, remember this is about planning ahead and keeping tabs on your bottom line to ensure you don’t overspend without realizing it. If you splurge in one area, you can pull back in another to be sure it balances out in the end.
